It has been almost three years since our last in-person Picnic Day, and this coming Saturday, April 23, marks the first celebration we’ve had to spotlight our campus in an incredibly long time. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be out in force with multiple exhibits to show visitors why we continue to uphold our ranking as first in the nation and second in the world in agriculture. Entomology plans to woo visitors with bug doctors, maggot art, discussions about using insects in forensics and, of course, the cockroach races. Plant sciences will bring their weed doctor, quiz everyone on tomato genetics and provide a demonstration on how corn is extracted from the stalk. Plant pathology will keep everyone happy with strawberry plugs (come early, they go quickly!), and atmospheric science graduate students plan to demonstrate weather experiments and talk about clouds, tornadoes and pressure. As always, there will be several animals on showcase all over campus and at the Cole Facility, tours of the winery and so much more.

And in the spirit of all the programs that make our college great, there will be several opportunities to contribute support to our students, research and facilities through Give Day, which is also scheduled for Saturday, April 23. We have many challenges that need funding, and even the smallest donation can unlock a generous gift. Challenges include extensive assistance for our students through scholarships and experiential learning opportunities and gifts to further research in animal genetics, water conservation, alternative approaches to pest control  and maintaining the Bee Haven Garden.

This month’s newsletter highlights several members of our community who have received accolades for their work, including Professor Francene Steinberg, who was named the winner of the UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement! Faculty from CA&ES have won this prestigious award three times in the past four years. Professor Steinberg exemplifies the best of faculty in her dedication to helping students and her commitment to serving the greater public through research and outreach.

And finally, the college is soliciting nominations for our Award of Distinction. Every year the college presents the Award of Distinction to honor individuals whose contributions and achievements have positively impacted our communities, advanced science and education or enhanced the college’s ability to serve California and the world. There are several categories to celebrate alumni, friends of the college and exceptional staff and faculty. We invite you to help us recognize deserving members of our community by submitting a nomination. This year’s nomination deadline is May 13.
