A Message From the Dean - May 2025
Spring is bursting all around us and that same energy can be found across campus in classrooms, labs, auditoriums and other spaces as we all approach the home stretch of the spring quarter.
On May 5, we hosted our second CA&ES symposium, Innovating Solutions for the Future of California and Beyond, which brought together state officials, industry, nonprofits and others to learn about our latest research and innovations. We also hosted a “Making Connections” working lunch that allowed people to join tables to discuss several topics ranging from AgTech and climate efforts to nutrition security and working lands. Attendees also engaged with faculty, staff and student research posters.
We hosted incoming students and their families at our transfer Aggie Day, where they had a chance to learn more about UC Davis and our college via campus and housing tours, a resource fair highlighting majors, student group sessions and other activities. And, yes, the beloved Bike Barn was open.
Later in the month we welcomed people from around the globe to the State of the Science Summit: Reducing Methane from Animal Agriculture in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The goal: to support collaboration and research that helps the livestock industry meet climate goals.
We had excellent uptake by media outlets on our research stories: deleting genes that generate gluten proteins in wheat; how to better align floating solar projects with renewable energy and biodiversity goals; and how sulfur runoff from sugarcane crops is affecting the Florida Everglades.
Our students also had some big moments, including graduate students who got engaged with the help of the UC Davis Sheepmowers and two students who were awarded Delta Science fellowships by the California Sea Grant and Delta Stewardship Council.
Everything is possible here at UC Davis and the opportunites to grow, learn and develop are endless. Enjoy the journey!
