Emmy Werner Wins UC-wide Award
Professor emerita Emmy Werner, Department of Human and Community Development, is the first UC Davis faculty member to win the UC-wide Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award. The award, given seven times over the past 16 years, recognizes UC emeritus faculty members, mainly in the humanities in social sciences, for scholarship or educational service "of outstanding character" in any year after retirement. Werner, an internationally recognized development psychologist, spent a lifetime studying how children cope when confronted with adversity. Since her retirement, she has published books on children of the westward migration, the Civil War and World War II. The UC Davis Emeriti Association focused on Werner's 1999 accomplishments in nominating her for the award. Last year, she published "Through the Eyes of Innocents: Children Witness World War II." Her book "Reluctant Witnesses: Children's Voices from the Civil War" was released in paperback, and she had six book chapters and one journal article published or accepted for publication. In 1999, Werner also presented six research papers at national or international conferences. Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef describes Werner as "a campus treasure." "She loves teaching, and she is a skillful scholar," he said.

Landscape Structures Installed in Arboretum
"Exceptional!" That's how design professor Barbara Shawcroft, Department of Environmental Design, describes several of the 20 landscape structures recently installed in the UC Davis Arboretum. "They range from ephemeral - those that will stand for only a few days - to strongly supportive - those that will stay until deconstructed," Shawcroft explained. Thirty-one students of the Design 125, Structures in the Landscape class installed their landscape structures throughout the Arboretum this past week. They will be on view through June 5. When you step out the front door of Mrak Hall, turn to your left and step into the Arboretum. On your right in the redwood grove, you'll see a large-scale, geometric structure constructed from bamboo, rope and cellophane. It's colorful, creative and fun! The structure was designed by students Jessica Main and Karli Kane. In the same area, D'Arcy Stovall installed wood branches and ground leaves - swept into a circle. It's titled "Delicate Tracery." Other structures are found in Shield Oak Grove opposite the Medical Center and on the inner courtyard and on the outside façade wall of the Social Sciences Building. Take a look. They're exceptional!
