Chancellor’s awards in undergraduate research include CA&ES recipients

Congratulations to several CA&ES students and faculty acknowledged in recent Chancellor’s awards:

• Excellence in undergraduate research—Hana Minsky (global disease biology) was awarded the Dean Keith Simonton Prize and Jonathan Do (environmental toxicology) received an honorable mention
• Excellence in mentoring undergraduate research (faculty)—Assistant Professor Kristina Horback (animal science)
• Excellence in mentoring undergraduate research (graduate student/postdoc)—Ph.D. student Sarah Adcock (animal science)

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, coupled with the Dean Keith Simonton Prize, is an annual award instituted in 1994. The award recognizes outstanding undergraduate students for their research, scholarship and creativity. Institute of Food Technologists recognizes four CA&ES faculty members

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) recognized CA&ES faculty members with three achievement awards and one newly elected fellow. Recipients include:

Carl R. Fellers Award
Carl Winter, Ph.D., University of California, Davis

Carl Winter is a Cooperative Extension specialist emeritus and former extension food toxicologist and vice chair in the Department of Food Science and Technology. Winters is recognized as an innovative educator through his use of musical parodies to convey food safety information and is active in communication training for early-career food scientists.

Gilbert A. Leveille Award and Lectureship
Barbara Schneeman, Ph.D., University of California, Davis

Barbara Schneeman is a professor emerita in the Department of Food Science and Technology and the Department of Nutrition. She served as dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from 1993 to 1999. In 2004 she was appointed to a high-level post at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has since served in many federal food science and nutrition advisory positions.

Trailblazer Award and Lectureship
Christine Bruhn, Ph.D., CFS, University of California, Davis

Christine Bruhn is a Cooperative Extension specialist emerita in the Department of Food Science and Technology. She is recognized globally for her research and outreach programs in consumer behavior, food science, and food safety. She has championed collaboration among food science and nutrition associations to educate the public and media on nutrition and food safety issues.

New IFT Fellow
Zhongli Pan, Ph.D., University of California, Davis

Zhongli Pan, an adjunct professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, is a newly elected IFT fellow. An internationally recognized and accomplished leader, his impactful scientific research and development on new processing technologies has advanced engineering solutions to food and agricultural issues worldwide.

Amanda Crump wins excellence in teaching award

Plant sciences teaching professor Amanda Crump is recipient of the 2020 Western Region Award for Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences new teacher category.

She will be presented with the award June 22 during the online joint summer meeting of several western region land-grant associations. To learn more about those associations, please link here.

Based in the Department of Plant Sciences, Crump is an assistant professor of teaching in international agricultural development. She teaches courses for undergraduate and graduate students in international agricultural development theory and practice, program management and evaluation, and social change.

“Amanda is a master teacher who has brought uncommon thoughtfulness, design and structure to teaching,” said her faculty colleagues in support of her nomination. “She redesigned and taught several courses in the past year. All courses are well received by students. These courses are hands-on and promote critical thinking.”

Her research team focuses on improving educational outcomes for women and other marginalized people with the aim of improving food security and nutritional status. Crump has managed more than $40 million in international and domestic agricultural research projects and is the lead UC Davis investigator on the USAID Advancing Nutrition project, a $5 million effort to reduce malnutrition globally.

 

Three outstanding CA&ES advisors honored with Walker Award

Andrea Guggenbickler, Jim Fadel and Kiara Cuevas are recipients of this year’s Eleanor and Harry Walker Advising Award. The award supports and recognizes excellence in staff, faculty and peer advising in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

“Please join me in congratulating these very deserving individuals,” said Susan Ebeler, associate dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs. “Unfortunately, we’ve had to postpone the Celebration of Advising Reception until later in the summer or fall. We will have much to celebrate at that time and look forward to recognizing their accomplishments, as well as all of those in our college advising community.”
