Frank Mitloehner Honored With Science Communication Award

The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) named UC Davis animal scientist Frank Mitloehner the 2019 Borlaug CAST Communication Award recipient. Mitloehner, a professor and air quality extension specialist in the Department of Animal Science, is the 10th recipient of this award.

Meat Lab Team Finds the Winning Cure

The Meat Lab’s student employees found the right cure — with beef jerky — to regain the team title in the college section of the California Association of Meat Processors’ Cured Meat Competition.

With the recent win, UC Davis has now had possession of the Norm Eggin Championship Cup for six years out of the seven years it has been awarded.

“After losing the trophy to Cal Poly by a mere 10 points last year, our returning juniors and seniors really wanted to get it back,” said Caleb Sehnert, UC Davis Meat Lab manager and team coach.

Professor David Slaughter to receive medal for exceptional engineering achievement in agriculture

David Slaughter, a professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2019 Cyrus Hall McCormick-Jerome Increase Case Gold Medal from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. The award will be presented July 10 during the organization’s 2019 annual meeting in Boston. 

Twelve CA&ES scientists are included in list of most-cited researchers

Twelve of 19 UC Davis researchers named in the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list released by Clarivate Analytics are faculty in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. 

The list identifies exceptional scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence by publishing multiple papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations in a particular field and year during a 10-year period. 

Muir Institute Recognizes Faculty and Staff Solving Real-world Environmental Problems

The John Muir Institute of the Environment at University of California, Davis, announced the selection of the 2018 Muir Institute Fellows during its annual open house on October 22 at The Barn. Now in its second year, the program recognizes exemplary UC Davis faculty and staff whose career and research epitomizes the mission of the Muir Institute: Discover. Research. Solve.

Waterfowl Professor John Eadie receives a Lifetime Achievement Award for donor stewardship

Professor John Eadie, who holds the Dennis J. Raveling Endowed Chair in Waterfowl Biology, understands the importance of stewardship and donor engagement. For more than 20 years, he has kept in touch with donors through phone calls, meetings, events, and extensive impact reports. UC Davis recently acknowledged his accomplishments with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Honors and accomplishments for CA&ES faculty, staff and students Mench named honorary fellow of International Society for Applied Ethology 

Joy Mench, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal Science, has been named an honorary fellow of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE). She is only the third fellow named from the United States in the ISAE’s 52-year history. 

The “Pope of Foam” receives accolades from three brewing industry organizations

Charlie Bamforth—the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at UC Davis—is a legend in the world of fermented beverages. Many of the brew masters leading the renaissance in beer making today studied under his tutelage.

Three of the brewing industry’s professional organizations this year have or will be honoring the “Pope of Foam” with awards that speak to a lifetime of accomplishments.

Devin Rippner receives Van Alfen/MacDonald Graduate Student Support Fund Award

Devin Rippner is the 2018 recipient of the Neal Van Alfen and James MacDonald Graduate Student Support Fund Award for his research and leadership on the environmental fate of metals and metal oxide nanoparticles in soil and water.
